Special Numbers, 0800 etc
Make it easy for your customers to call
The easier you make it for callers, the more likely they are to lift the phone and dial your number. Whether you choose freephone numbers, local-rate numbers, or premium-rate numbers depends on how you want your potential customers to perceive you.
All 08 business-rate numbers are non-geographic, which means your company is no longer tied to one part of the country. Non-geographic telephone numbers are ideal for companies with several branches across the country and those that want to trade on a national rather than a local scale. It’s easy to add routing plans that automatically transfer non-geographic inbound calls to the branch or depot which is nearest the caller.
0800 freephone numbers
Customers can call you for free from anywhere in the UK. You pay the cost of the call. Some businesses use a range of freephone numbers, each of which is associated with a particular advertising campaign or website address. That gives them instant feedback on which promotional routes are bringing in the most new business.
0845 low-rate numbers
Customers call you at their local rate from anywhere in the UK. You pay absolutely nothing, not even a set-up fee. 0845 numbers are hugely popular because they cut the cost of calls for customers without adding to the supplier’s costs.
0871 higher-rate numbers
Customers pay an enhanced rate for their calls, while you collect a portion of the call charge as revenue. The rules are changing on 0871 numbers: from January 2008, ICSTIS (the premium-rate number regulator) will be checking to make sure that line owners manage their calls responsibly.
0870 higher-rate numbers
From January 2008, revenue-share from 0870 numbers will cease when customers start paying standard national rates for their calls. Worse, if you have an 0870 number to which other services are attached, you may have to pay for those services. We recommend that 0870-number holders migrate to an 0871 number to maintain their revenue.
0844 low-rate numbers
Customers pay a slightly enhanced rate for their calls, while you collect a portion of the call charge as revenue. 0844 numbers will not be regulated by ICSTIS.
